For many owners, a motorcycle is more than just a simple means of transportation. It is maintained, cared for and often also lovingly tuned. And to ensure that everything runs perfectly from day one, no mistakes must be made during the entire production process. In the Berlin factory of the premium motorcycle manufacturer BMW, the eepos aluminium crane system kit eepos one plays a decisive role in making this work.
Since the rebuild of their assembly line with eepos cranes, driverless transport systems and add-on concept, the production speed of the BMW motorcycles could be increased significantly. In addition, the ergonomics at each individual workstation improved significantly. Thanks to this reliable and flexible system concept, BMW Berlin is safely equipped for the future.
Standard workstation as basis
First of all, an ergonomic standard workstation was defined, consisting of a base frame just over 3 m wide and 3 m long made of eepos aluminium profiles of size L and a suspended media column, e.g. eepos base S, next to it. The base frame is designed like an oversized double-girder crane, which serves as the basis for an assembly cycle. serves. The handling devices, fixtures, tools, testing devices, etc. are hooked into it. The media column, electrical power, network connection, status monitors and various signal transmitters are provided. Since the base frame itself hangs on a crane runway made of eepos one profiles with integrated service stations, each workstation can be positioned flexibly and each assembly cycle can be easily replaced.

"The concept with an approximately 3 m wide assembly cycle, into which a base frame made of eepos aluminium profile is suspended, opens up great freedom for all extensions. If, for example, the tools and fixtures are suspended in the base frame parallel to the belt, they can be mounted on both sides of the motorcycle on the driverless transport systems.If the implements are suspended at an angle of 90° to the assembly line, it is possible to work on the motorcycle simultaneously from front to rear in several positions within one assembly cycle. What's more, many assembly workers take advantage of the smooth running and freedom from jamming of the eepos systems by allowing the systems to return to their original positions after use by means of simple return springs".
The complete fastening of the eepos systems and the system technology to the hall roof finally creates the space required for the assembly line and the flexible floor-bound pitch concept. Below the crane systems, route trains bring material just-in-sequence to the respective assembly cycle and fill shelves. If the racks and devices for pre-assembled and customer-specific components such as cladding elements or tyre sets are provided to the right and left of the assembly line, these can be removed with the eepos crane systems and installed on the motorcycle as quickly as possible.
Quality above all else
For continuous measurement and testing of the quality of the assembly line, the current status in the assembly cycle is displayed after each eepos base frame on a media column. After each work step, signal lamps or a monitor on the spot provide a quality control for the assembly employee on the assembly line. If delays occur, a limiter on the eepos base frame shortly before the media column registers that a tool is leaving the cycle and triggers a warning signal. In addition, every fitter can call the foreman who is responsible for this cycle via the media column. The foreman is informed via a signal light and a mobile phone message and can immediately decide what to do next.
